The Tucson Jazz Institute Ellington big band, directed by Doug Tidaback, is recognized as the best band of high school students in the United States. In May the TJI Ellington band won first place at the Essentially Ellington Festival at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. This is high school jazz bands most prestigious and competitive festival. The band also traveled to performed in New Orleans in January and Monterey in April. Many recent TJI graduates are at the the world’s most prestigious music schools including Juilliard, Manhattan School of music, New England Conservatory, NYU and many others including ASU and the U of A.
Also on the program will be the Arizona Roadrunners, a tradition jazz band (Dixieland) featuring TJI faculty, students and Alumni. This concert will feature TJI alumni from Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music as well as teachers Doug Tidaback on trombone and Scott Black on bass.
